Country & territory guide
Compare schools across Austria.
Compare the selected Austria school collections by actual location, phase and award. Vienna and the Salzburg-region collection contain different school-diploma and IB sequences. A school in Austria does not automatically issue the Austrian Matura, and a regional collection name should not replace the actual teaching address when comparing a day-school or residential plan.

Planning a school search in Austria
Separate the school diploma from the IB route
American International School Salzburg describes its diploma through credits earned in high-school courses and end-of-course assessment. The qualification is the school’s own diploma rather than an Austrian Matura inferred from its location. For a transfer, ask how previous courses count toward that specific graduation plan and which compulsory study remains. The published numerical credit requirements should be reviewed with the school for the individual applicant rather than converted into an automatic transfer entitlement.
St Gilgen’s education page describes a primary Grade 5 phase, a middle-years MYP sequence and senior study in Grades 11–12. Its senior description distinguishes the full IB Diploma from individual course certificates, alongside the StGIS school diploma. Compare the actual award combination and assessment commitment with AIS Salzburg’s credit-based route. A school’s published MYP description is not used here to assert an independently checked authorisation date or a PYP programme in its primary phase.

Compare Vienna’s phase map and actual teaching site
Danube International School Vienna publishes MYP study and Diploma provision in Grades 11–12. Its Diploma page describes an individual meeting with the coordinator to review subjects against strengths and future plans. Use that conversation to confirm the required language, mathematics and science choices for the proposed next course. A two-year Diploma offer should be evaluated through the student’s complete subject plan, not only the availability of one desired subject.
The Salzburg-region collection includes distinct addresses: AIS Salzburg publishes Moosstrasse in Salzburg, while St Gilgen publishes Ischlerstraße in St Gilgen. They should not be treated as one city-campus journey. Compare the actual division and site with Vienna before arranging visits or accommodation. For a residential shortlist, request the precise eligible phases, term-time arrangements, weekend and holiday supervision separately from the academic programme; a school name alone does not establish the family’s required provision.

Use each school’s placement process and credential advice
Danube’s admissions policy requires previous school records in English or German, with translation into English where needed. It considers previous records and other development factors in placement and describes separate language and subject grouping procedures. Ask how those processes would apply to the child’s current schooling. Do not apply one school’s grade-placement, assessment or age policy across Austrian national and international providers.
For a senior applicant, have the intended next institution check the exact school diploma, full IB Diploma or course results and subject combination. Institutional accreditation and university admission are separate questions, so retain the issuer and award name in every comparison. Request a current joining plan and dated quotation covering tuition, examinations, support and any residential costs. Check the academic year and source-review date shown on the profile, then request current course, placement and financial confirmation.

Each row combines evidence from several profiles. Its phases may be offered at different schools; it does not mean every school provides every phase. Online delivery is listed separately. Open the school profile for its exact route and eligibility.

Parent questions about Austria schools
Does every international school in Austria award the Matura?
No such conclusion follows from these examples. AIS Salzburg describes its own credit-based diploma, while St Gilgen distinguishes its school diploma and IB options. Confirm the exact credential and current requirements with the provider and receiving institution.

Does taking IB courses mean completing the full IB Diploma at St Gilgen?
The school explicitly distinguishes full Diploma study from individual course certificates, alongside its own diploma. Ask which pathway the applicant would follow and which assessments and subjects are required. Keep the full award and selected course results separate.
