Planning a school search in Belgium

Distinguish similarly named British schools by phase

British International School of Brussels describes English National Curriculum provision from Early Years through the end of Key Stage 2, with French study from Reception to Year 6. This is a younger-phase comparison, rather than evidence of a Sixth Form programme. Families considering it should ask about preparation and the next receiving school after primary as well as current classroom language and support.

The selected British School of Brussels profile is its secondary provision in Tervuren. Its curriculum page describes GCSE/International GCSE study before IB Diploma, A-level or BTEC senior choices, alongside a separately described French-English bilingual pathway. These are distinct from the primary scope of BISB. Confirm the actual campus, proposed section and subjects, rather than allowing similar school names to imply one institution or an identical examination sequence.

Compare Brussels and Waterloo senior combinations

International School of Brussels’ high-school page identifies Grades 10–12 and publishes IB, AP, BTEC and US school-diploma options. St John’s in Waterloo describes senior combinations involving the IB Diploma, AP study and its own High School Diploma. Ask each provider which exact credential or combination the applicant would pursue. A list of pathways does not establish that every pupil completes every award or that any one result guarantees entry to a receiving university.

Use Brussels, Tervuren and Waterloo as distinct collection starting points and obtain the actual division’s teaching address. BSB publishes its Tervuren address on the curriculum page, while St John’s identifies Waterloo in its high-school description. For siblings, compare phase coverage and the daily school plan separately. A school that fits an older child’s Diploma interests may require a different younger-year or bilingual comparison for the rest of the family.

Keep language-Community context and credential checks separate

Belgium’s official federal information assigns education powers to the Flemish, French and German-speaking Communities. That context should remain separate from an international provider’s published curriculum: an English-medium offer is not proof of a particular Belgian national leaving award. Ask which authority and recognition arrangements apply to the proposed course, and identify the qualification issuer before comparing it with a later Belgian or overseas education route.

Have the receiving school review previous reports, teaching languages and completed assessments. Request a written joining-year plan, current subject availability and support arrangements, especially for a pupil moving between primary language development and an externally examined senior course. Obtain the school’s dated financial terms with tuition, examinations, transport and additional support separated. Check the academic year and source-review date shown on the profile, then request current details. A regional school name does not establish current places, ownership status or an individual admissions outcome.

Parent questions about Belgium schools

Do the two British-named Brussels examples cover the same phases?

No. BISB’s cited curriculum covers Early Years through Key Stage 2. BSB’s selected Tervuren secondary profile has GCSE/International GCSE and senior options. Confirm the provider and division carefully, including the next school after primary.

Does an international school in Belgium automatically issue a Belgian qualification?

The selected pages publish their own IB, British, AP and school-diploma options. Ask for the exact award and issuer, then check the applicable authority and receiving institution’s requirements. Belgium’s language-Community responsibilities do not make every international credential one national award.
