Country & territory guide
Compare schools across Portugal.
Compare the selected Portugal school collections by actual municipality, teaching language and senior award. Carcavelos, Sintra, Porto and Lagoa provide different British, American, bilingual and IB sequences. A Lisbon or Algarve brand does not establish one campus, and the child’s proposed course matters more than a country-wide curriculum label.
8 included profiles · 7 destination collections · 0 dated tuition schedules
This is a selected directory, with different levels of evidence in each collection. Open the named campus profile to check its curriculum phases, review date and sources before contacting admissions.
Planning a school search in Portugal
Compare the Lisbon-area pathways at the joining phase
St Julian’s in Carcavelos describes an English curriculum leading to GCSE examinations, followed by a choice of IB Diploma or Career-related Programme. Its bilingual route instead teaches the Portuguese National Curriculum in English and Portuguese before a foundation transition into the English and IB sequence. Ask which route the child would enter and how existing Portuguese and English study would be assessed; bilingual provision is a specific learning pathway, rather than an automatic placement result.
CAISL’s high-school page describes an American High School Diploma for graduating pupils, with the option to pursue the IB Diploma alongside it in Grades 11–12. The selected profile belongs to Sintra, despite Lisbon appearing in its name. Compare required school-diploma coursework, full Diploma assessment and the proposed subject choices with St Julian’s alternatives. Do not assume every American-school applicant takes the full IB or that one award grants automatic university credit.

Distinguish Porto and Lagoa senior choices
Oporto British School describes UK-based Key Stage 3 study, Cambridge IGCSE preparation and the IB Diploma. Its secondary programme also distinguishes Portuguese as a first or foreign language. A transfer to Porto should therefore include a conversation about the appropriate language course and examination sequence, rather than selecting a British school on the assumption that it ends with A levels. Ask the receiving team to map completed subjects to the proposed next phase.
Nobel Algarve’s Lagoa page describes English-curriculum study with IGCSE, A-level and BTEC options, alongside British or Portuguese education. Its shared navigation also displays a separate Almancil school and its programmes. Keep the selected Lagoa enquiry tied to Lagoa: a programme mentioned for another campus is not evidence that it is available at the applicant’s site. Request the exact national or international section, course timetable and credential issuer in the written offer.

Build a practical campus and qualification shortlist
Use Carcavelos, Sintra, Porto and Lagoa as distinct collection starting points, then confirm the teaching address and division for each child. St Julian’s publishes its Carcavelos address on the curriculum page; the country guide does not treat every Lisbon-area school as a central Lisbon commute. For siblings, ask whether their phases share a site and whether current transport and collection arrangements fit the family’s proposed location.
Before choosing a senior pathway, ask the next institution about the exact subjects and award it requires. A school description of international recognition is not an individual equivalence or admission decision. Send reports and course outlines to admissions and request a current joining-year plan. Compare dated written quotations in the school’s billing currency, separating tuition, examinations, language support and transport; check the academic year and source-review date shown on the profile, then request a current quotation.

Each row combines evidence from several profiles. Its phases may be offered at different schools; it does not mean every school provides every phase. Online delivery is listed separately. Open the school profile for its exact route and eligibility.

Parent questions about Portugal schools
Do the selected British schools in Portugal all finish with A levels?
No. Oporto describes IGCSE preparation followed by the IB Diploma, while St Julian’s publishes Diploma and Career-related senior choices. Lagoa publishes A-level and BTEC options. Confirm the named campus’s actual course sequence and the child’s offered pathway rather than inferring the award from British branding.

Does CAISL’s American diploma mean every pupil completes the IB Diploma?
The school distinguishes its American High School Diploma from the optional full IB Diploma in Grades 11–12. Ask which requirements the proposed plan meets and how previous courses will count. A full Diploma and school graduation remain separate items in the comparison.
