Choosing a school in Johannesburg

A Johannesburg enquiry needs the specific campus and division. AISJ's Johannesburg school is in Knopjeslaagte, Midrand; St Stithians is in Lyme Park, Sandton, with separate preparatory and college transitions. Their senior pathways, residential options and entry points differ, so a broad Johannesburg or IB label cannot determine the offered class or boarding arrangement.

This guide accompanies 2 included profiles. It is a selected collection; confirm places and current charges with each school.

AISJ's detailed academic-program page retains 2025–26 semester dates. Its PYP announcement is dated October 2025 and describes candidacy. Confirm intended-year credits and current primary authorisation; the current campus and boarding contacts were separately read.

Distinguish Midrand from the Sandton school divisions

AISJ's contact page identifies Plot 160, Scorpion Trail Street, Knopjeslaagte, Midrand, for its Johannesburg Pre-K3–Grade 12 campus. It separately identifies Pretoria through Grade 8. Use the Johannesburg physical address for the selected school enquiry; a Bryanston postal bag or the Pretoria contact is not the pupil's Midrand arrival point.

St Stithians publishes 40 Peter Place, Lyme Park, Sandton, and identifies Bishop Malinga Gate as its main entrance. Its current Junior Preparatory page covers coeducational Grades RRR, RR, R, 1 and 2, before boys and girls move to their respective preparatory schools. The central admissions page places those schools in Grades 3–7 and the separate colleges in Grades 8–12. Ask which division and entrance the child will use after each transition.

Separate senior IB choices from IEB matriculation

AISJ's current boarding page describes High School Programme, full IB Diploma, hybrid HSP/IB and learner-specific pathways, each linked to its school diploma on graduation. Its detailed academic-program page places HSP and Diploma study in Grades 11–12, but still shows a 2025–26 semester calendar. Request the intended-year graduation and transferred-credit plan; that older page says pre-high-school courses do not earn high-school credit.

The school's separate October 2025 announcement records PYP candidacy at Johannesburg and Pretoria. Ask for the current authorisation status when discussing primary study; senior Diploma authorisation does not settle that question. St Stithians' current overview instead identifies Grade 12 IEB matriculation examinations. Compare the actual final assessment, subjects and receiving-school requirements rather than assume an IB route or identical graduation timetable across the two providers.

Treat boarding and school entry as separate decisions

AISJ's current contact page lists Johannesburg boarding for Grades 8–12 at the same Midrand address. Discuss residential eligibility, supervision, weekend arrangements and charges separately from the academic offer. At St Stithians, the central admissions page explicitly says Girls' College does not offer boarding. A college-wide boarding label should therefore not be applied to a girl's selected secondary division.

St Stithians names Grade R and Grade 8 as its two major entry points, with other grades filled from relevant waiting lists as places become available. That does not remove the younger RRR/RR provision shown in its current junior page. Request the applicable route and waiting-list decision for the actual grade, and obtain separate day or residential quotations. Neither a published entry point nor a residential page identifies an individual vacancy.

Parent questions about Johannesburg schools

Does AISJ's Johannesburg boarding description cover every school grade?

Its current contact page identifies boarding specifically for Grades 8–12 at Plot 160 in Midrand. The Pre-K3–Grade 12 campus range is broader than the residential range. Confirm the pupil's boarding eligibility and academic placement separately, including the intended year's residential charges and arrangements.

Does St Stithians Girls' College offer boarding?

The central admissions page explicitly says Girls' College does not offer boarding. It separately identifies girls' secondary study in Grades 8–12. Ask about the appropriate day-school division and entry process; boarding described elsewhere in the wider college should not be transferred to that girls' provision.
