Choosing a school in Townsville

Townsville’s reviewed selection brings together The Cathedral School in Mundingburra and Townsville Grammar’s secondary provision at North Ward. For senior applicants, compare Queensland certification and vocational options with Grammar’s IB Diploma alternative. For residential or overseas pupils, English support and term-break accommodation can be as important as the qualification.

This guide accompanies 2 included profiles. It is a selected collection; confirm places and current charges with each school.

Map the qualification to the correct senior phase

Cathedral publishes senior pathways focused on QCE and tertiary preparation, together with vocational education and training options. Townsville Grammar’s secondary page identifies two Years 11–12 academic routes: the Queensland programme leading to the QCE and the IB Diploma. Its earlier secondary programme uses the Australian Curriculum, with Year 10 preparing for senior study. Diploma evidence for the final two years should not be stretched into an IB claim for Years 7–10.

QCAA identifies the QCE as Queensland’s senior schooling qualification. Ask each school to explain the difference between obtaining that certificate, meeting university prerequisites and becoming eligible for the intended tertiary selection process. For an incoming Year 11 pupil, request a complete two-year subject plan; for a transfer after that point, ask whether prior work and assessment timing allow the intended pathway to continue.

Keep Mundingburra and North Ward campus choices clear

Cathedral describes kindergarten through Year 12 on one Mundingburra campus, with junior, middle and senior divisions. Townsville Grammar’s North Ward campus is its Years 7–12 location and boarding base; its Annandale and North Shore sites serve younger pupils separately. A search result for the whole school can therefore lead a primary family to the wrong address.

Use the child’s actual phase to plan a visit and a day-school journey. For boarders, ask where classes, evening study and residential accommodation sit within that campus. Cathedral’s boarding page describes different room arrangements for senior and younger pupils, and states that dormitories close during term breaks. A boarding offer should consequently address holiday accommodation and travel-day arrangements as well as the ordinary school-week routine.

Ask what English support replaces in the timetable

Grammar describes English-language support differently by phase: in younger secondary years it can replace a language or elective, while senior support follows a separate timetable. It also describes evening support for international boarders. Ask which classes an individual pupil would miss, how support changes as proficiency develops and whether the desired elective remains available.

Cathedral’s published 2026 fee page distinguishes day fees, five- and seven-day boarding, and international-student fees. Those categories are not interchangeable quotations. Request an entry-year annual total, the residential pattern that applies to the child and any compulsory support or holiday costs. Neither original profile established current tuition totals or individual age and entry eligibility; these remain questions for admissions rather than assumptions based on a destination guide.

These are the pathways recorded for each included campus. Online provision appears separately. A senior qualification does not establish provision in younger years.

Parent questions about Townsville schools

Can Townsville senior pupils choose the IB Diploma?

Townsville Grammar publishes the Diploma as an alternative to its Queensland pathway in Years 11–12. Cathedral’s verified senior evidence describes QCE-oriented and vocational pathways. Confirm the particular school, year and subject combination; city-wide availability of the Diploma does not establish it at every school or earlier phase.

Does Cathedral boarding include accommodation throughout school holidays?

Its boarding page states that dormitories close during term breaks and pupils must go home or arrange alternative accommodation. Ask for the proposed holiday plan, any available homestay option and its separate conditions and costs. A five- or seven-day term-time boarding category does not settle holiday accommodation.
