Country & territory guide

Compare schools across Brazil.

Choosing a school in Brazil involves two linked decisions: where the child will study, and which school and external awards the programme can lead to. São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte examples show different combinations of Brazilian, American, Cambridge and IB study. Compare the relevant phase and intended transfer year before narrowing the campus list.

São Paulo: compare awards before comparing labels

At Graded, the American high-school diploma, Brazilian diploma and IB qualification have separate requirements. Its published graduation guide places Grade 9 at the end of Ensino Fundamental and Grades 10–12 within Ensino Médio. The Brazilian award requires completion of the Brazilian Academic Program, including Portuguese and Brazilian Social Studies, alongside the US diploma requirements. The senior IB route allows a full Diploma or individual IB courses in Grades 11–12.

St Paul’s offers another progression: Forms 4–5 prepare pupils for IGCSE, followed by a two-year full IB Diploma for all Sixth Form pupils. Portuguese, História and Geografia appear within its senior curriculum. A family comparing these schools should ask how previous Portuguese study, examination subjects and transfer credits fit the proposed award; an English-medium description alone does not answer those questions.

Rio campuses and Belo Horizonte’s different senior route

EARJ lists Gávea at Estrada da Gávea and Barra at Rua Colbert Coelho in Barra da Tijuca. Its continuum progresses from PYP in early/elementary education through MYP in middle and lower high school to DP in upper high school. Compare the specific campus and division when arranging visits, including the destination of younger siblings as they advance.

Belo Horizonte’s EABH, in Buritis, describes MYP in Grades 6–10 and AP options in high school. That is a useful counterexample to assuming that every school with IB middle years also offers an IB Diploma. In São Paulo, Graded’s Morumbi context and St Paul’s Jardim Paulistano address likewise belong in the practical comparison: match home and transport planning to the teaching site, not simply the city name.

Entry year, family category and the school calendar

St Paul’s other-entry policy, reviewed on 15 October 2026, restricts Reception–Lower Sixth vacancies to specified international or repatriating-family categories. It normally starts IGCSE entrants in Form 4 and Diploma entrants in Lower Sixth, rather than admitting in the second year of either course. Exceptions are individual decisions. Its August year also requires specific discussion when transferring from a Southern Hemisphere calendar.

Graded publishes an August 2027 local admissions timetable, while inviting relocating international families to contact admissions about space and timing. These are distinct processes. Request the applicable intake calendar, grade decision and full fee schedule, including examination, transport and support charges; neither a published application window nor a school’s curriculum list establishes an available place.

Parent questions about Brazil schools

Must every IB senior student in Brazil take the full Diploma?

No. The reviewed school examples differ: St Paul’s says all Sixth Form pupils study the full IB Diploma; Graded’s graduation guide offers full Diploma and individual IB-course pathways in Grades 11–12. Confirm the chosen route, school-diploma requirements and actual subject combination with the named school.

Can a child normally join St Paul’s halfway through IGCSE or the IB Diploma?

Its other-entry policy checked on 15 October 2026 states no normal Form 5 or Upper Sixth entry, because those are the second years of two-year courses. It acknowledges individual exceptions. Families must also satisfy the relevant other-entry category and assessment requirements; ask admissions about the precise proposed intake.
