Choosing a school in Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro's selected Escola Americana do Rio de Janeiro (EARJ) profiles distinguish Barra and Gávea campuses within one provider. Each has its own IB record and address, while shared programme pages explain the learning sequence. Compare the receiving campus, grade, graduation requirements and August-to-June calendar before treating a school-wide description as a personal transfer offer.

This guide accompanies 2 included profiles. It is a selected collection; confirm places and current charges with each school.

The shared senior page describes DP participation and also calls the full Diploma an option. Confirm the individual's award requirements and subject availability; the IB records do not establish a personal offer.

Use the Barra or Gávea record for the actual attendance site

EARJ publishes Barra at Rua Colbert Coelho 155, Barra da Tijuca, and Gávea at Estrada da Gávea 132. The IB's separate records identify Diploma, MYP and PYP coordinators at the respective addresses. Use the named campus for visits and ask which entrance and receiving division apply. A shared provider name does not establish the same daily journey or an offered place at both sites.

For siblings, request each child's campus, timetable and transport arrangements before choosing attendance plans. EARJ's admissions welcome page describes campus meetings in Barra and Gávea and says international applications can be considered throughout the year, subject to seats. That provides an enquiry route, not permission to assume a particular grade, transfer date or shared sibling collection is available.

Compare the PYP and MYP stages with the senior award plan

EARJ's continuum page describes PYP for early childhood and elementary, MYP for middle and lower high school, and senior Diploma study. Its Lower School page specifically places Kindergarten–Grade 5 within PYP; the high-school page places Grades 9–10 in the final MYP stages. Match completed learning and language study with the actual receiving class rather than use general programme age ranges as an admission cutoff.

The Grades 11–12 page describes the American High School Diploma and Brazilian Ensino Médio Diploma, with an additional IB Diploma for pupils who successfully complete the full programme. It also calls the full DP an option for students. Ask how the proposed subjects, school graduation requirements and intended IB route fit the pupil's transcript. Individual IB study or attendance in senior school alone does not complete all three awards.

Check the calendar, completed file and transfer assessment

EARJ's welcome page says its Northern Hemisphere school year starts in August and ends in June, with a Brazilian summer break from mid-December to early February. A pupil arriving from another calendar needs a receiving-year review rather than simply continuing the same class number. Discuss the proposed joining date, completed subject assessments and senior sequence with the actual campus team.

The application process asks initially for birth and vaccination records and a photo, then academic information including the last three end-of-year reports where applicable and a school contact for a confidential recommendation. Once documents are received, the team arranges a meeting and any necessary assessments. Only complete applications reach committee review. Ask for the written class decision, language support and a complete dated fee quotation before organising attendance.

Parent questions about Rio de Janeiro schools

Does either EARJ campus record apply automatically to the other site?

The IB has separate Barra and Gávea records with programme coordinators at different addresses. Use the record and admissions team for the actual receiving campus, then confirm the offered grade, subjects and timetable. One provider's shared programme explanation does not settle a personal place at both locations.

Does studying in EARJ Grades 11–12 automatically earn three diplomas?

Its senior page distinguishes school graduation awards from the IB Diploma earned by pupils who successfully complete the full programme, which it also describes as an option. Request the individual American, Brazilian and IB graduation plan and transferred-course decision rather than infer every award from attendance.
