Country & territory guide

Compare schools across the United Kingdom.

A United Kingdom school comparison should identify the nation, locality and school-specific qualification before selecting a route. England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland cannot be reduced to one English GCSE-to-A-level sequence. The reviewed destinations include contrasting Scottish programmes and separate sixth-form campuses, alongside English school collections; check the actual joining year and planned award.

175 included profiles · 169 destination collections · 0 dated tuition schedules

This is a selected directory, with different levels of evidence in each collection. Open the named campus profile to check its curriculum phases, review date and sources before contacting admissions.

Planning a school search in the United Kingdom

Qualifications Wales' parent resources and CCEA's post-school university application guidance were available as official indexed text; their full pages could not be retrieved. They direct families to qualification resources in Wales and post-school progression guidance in Northern Ireland. No new examination rule, grading equivalence or individual transfer decision is asserted from those summaries.

Compare qualifications at school level, including within Scotland

Hutchesons' Grammar School in Glasgow publishes Higher and Advanced Higher choices, including some Higher study beginning in S4. Fettes College in Edinburgh instead describes GCSE or IGCSE courses followed by a choice of A levels or the IB Diploma in Sixth Form. A Scottish address therefore does not establish one qualification sequence, just as a British filter does not establish the same assessment structure throughout the UK. In Wales, consult Qualifications Wales' parent resources. In Northern Ireland, ask the school for its qualification specifications and use CCEA's guidance for post-school progression and university applications. Request examination boards, course years and subjects already completed before assessing a transfer, rather than assuming an English year or grade has an automatic national equivalent.

Distinguish a destination from a school group's campuses

Cardiff Sixth Form College identifies separate Cardiff and Cambridge addresses on its school-owned about page. A Cardiff enquiry should specify that campus rather than treating the group's name as proof of the teaching location. Glasgow and Edinburgh also remain distinct destination collections, while English options span London and many separate towns. Decide whether the family needs a daily school journey, weekly accommodation or full boarding before comparing those locations. Obtain the named division's address, teaching timetable and residential terms. Ask how weekends, travel, guardianship arrangements and holiday accommodation would work for the particular child; a senior-school or sixth-form listing does not establish junior entry or a suitable boarding offer.

Match subjects, transfer timing and the complete quotation

Use the intended destination to narrow the journey, then use the qualification to narrow the course. Fettes' two-year senior choices and Hutchesons' flexible Higher pathways call for different conversations about prior coursework and subject combinations. Bring current reports, examination syllabuses and any completed assessments to admissions. Request the proposed entry year, subjects that can continue and support available during transition. Compare a dated GBP quotation for the offered day or boarding arrangement, including joining payments, meals, transport, examinations, trips and any required support. Ask which charges are included and which conditions apply to withdrawal. A countrywide annual range cannot establish equivalent services or the cost of a particular offer.

Parent questions about United Kingdom schools

Will every Scottish independent school lead to Highers?

No. Hutchesons describes Higher and Advanced Higher study, while Fettes publishes GCSE or IGCSE followed by A levels or the IB Diploma. Identify the named school's programme and the joining phase, then obtain its current subject requirements. Geography is useful for locating a campus, but it cannot substitute for qualification evidence.

Can a shared GCSE or A-level label settle a move between UK nations?

No. Check the receiving school's examination board, specification, assessment already completed and entry requirements. Qualifications Wales provides qualification resources; CCEA's cited page covers post-school progression and university applications. The shared award name alone does not establish that a mid-course transfer preserves every subject or assessment, and a school must confirm the individual placement.
