Choosing a school in Almaty

Almaty families can compare a Kalkaman campus with two Al Farabi Avenue addresses, then choose between school-diploma/AP, British examination and Miras programme sequences. A separate planning issue is Haileybury's announced Wellington partnership for 2027–28, which remains a future transition on this review date.

This guide accompanies 3 included profiles. It is a selected collection; confirm places and current charges with each school.

Haileybury's examination booklets cover 2025–27; the Wellington partnership is announced for 2027–28. Miras phase labels are attributed to its school pages, without a newly verified IB authorisation date or a promised future subject list.

Distinguish today's campuses from the 2027–28 transition

QSI Almaty International School lists 185 Baiken Ashimov Street in Kalkaman 2, Nauryzbay. Haileybury Almaty publishes 112 Al Farabi Avenue, while Miras lists 190 Al Farabi Avenue. Use those actual addresses when arranging visits and asking about school transport; sharing a major avenue does not establish a common pickup route or school entrance.

The joint Kazakhstan announcement says the relationship with Haileybury UK ends in summer 2027 and the Almaty and Astana schools begin a Wellington College Education partnership from academic year 2027–28. It says curricula and examination boards are intended to continue. Families comparing a 2026–27 place with a later start should ask about their own cohort's transition, contract and subjects; the announcement is not evidence of a completed 2026 rebranding.

Read the senior route and the year map separately

Haileybury's publications list IGCSE and A level booklets for 2025–27. Use that published period when discussing subject combinations, then ask for the intended intake's options and prerequisites. QSI's secondary page instead describes school diploma requirements with AP courses, including online courses through QSI Virtual School where a subject or timetable requires them. Ask which credits and courses will be taught on campus.

Miras integrates its primary PYP description with Kazakhstan's national standards. Its middle-school map calls Grade 5 'MYP 0', a preparatory transition year, and places MYP 1–5 in Grades 6–10. The admissions page separately describes a national Grade 11 route and the IB Diploma in Grades 11–12. A family moving at Grade 10 should settle the intended senior route before comparing subject choices or assuming that both Grade 11 options have identical entry conditions.

Ask for placement in the actual language and fee category

Miras describes Kazakh, Russian and English in its primary provision and publishes language-specific admission assessments. Its national Grade 11 entry has prior-study and certificate conditions. Ask which stream is offered, which language tests apply and how a previous school certificate will be reviewed. Its 2026–27 notices separate tuition and meals and distinguish fee categories; obtain the category-specific written quote rather than treating one listed band as universal.

QSI accepts applications throughout the year subject to space, and reviews school records alongside placement evidence. Its admissions page describes English-language MAP testing from age five and an essay from age eight. Send previous reports or secondary transcripts before requesting a grade decision, and ask whether required courses, English support and any online provision fit the child's proposed start date.

Parent questions about Almaty schools

Is Haileybury Almaty's Wellington partnership already the current 2026 arrangement?

The joint announcement dates the new partnership to academic year 2027–28 after the Haileybury UK relationship ends in summer 2027. It is a future transition. Ask for written guidance for the child's intended cohort, including subjects and fees.

Does Miras describe Grade 5 as MYP 1?

No. Its school year map describes Grade 5 as MYP 0, a preparatory year, with MYP 1 beginning in Grade 6. This explains the school's phase labels; it does not independently establish a new authorisation date or an applicant's placement.
