Country & territory guide

Compare schools across Canada.

Compare the selected Canada school collections by province, actual division and graduation route. Toronto, Victoria, Calgary and Sherbrooke illustrate different provincial and international qualification combinations. Canada has provincial and territorial education systems, so a Canadian curriculum label should be unpacked into the exact courses, award and transfer requirements relevant to the intended school.

53 included profiles · 49 destination collections · 0 dated tuition schedules

This is a selected directory, with different levels of evidence in each collection. Open the named campus profile to check its curriculum phases, review date and sources before contacting admissions.

Planning a school search in Canada

Ontario’s inspection guidance was reviewed through official indexed text after direct retrieval failed; its update is dated May 2024. CMEC’s older enrolment figures are excluded. School-owned award descriptions were directly read; original catalogue dates remain unchanged.

Choose a province and division together

CMEC explains that Canada has no integrated national education system: provinces and territories are responsible for their own elementary and secondary systems, including curricula and assessment. A country shortlist should therefore preserve the province as well as the city. Compare Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec through the intended school’s actual award arrangements, rather than applying one Canadian placement or graduation rule to every destination.

St. Michaels University School in Victoria publishes its junior-school address on Victoria Avenue and its middle and senior school on Richmond Road. Before comparing Victoria with Toronto’s Upper Canada College or Calgary’s Rundle College, establish each child’s division and campus plan. Keep enrolment, language support and transport questions attached to that division; a city collection starts the practical comparison.

Compare provincial awards with IB and AP study

Upper Canada College’s Toronto senior page distinguishes full IB Diploma pathways from an IB Diploma Courses pathway. It states that all its published senior pathways allow students to meet Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements. The important comparison is therefore the actual combination of provincial graduation requirements and full Diploma or course assessments. Ask which pathway the applicant is offered and how previous credits and required subjects will be handled before assuming that every UCC graduate takes the same IB award.

SMUS describes a curriculum following British Columbia requirements with Advanced Placement courses at senior level. Rundle College’s Grades 7–12 page follows Alberta curriculum standards and explains that AP and IB courses do not form part of its academic approach. These offer different choices from Toronto’s IB routes. A family can compare provincial coursework, advanced subject opportunities and continuity from the previous school without treating the presence of AP or IB as a national requirement or a guarantee of university credit.

Check the award issuer even when the campus province is clear

Bishop’s College School in Sherbrooke illustrates why location alone does not identify the diploma. Its academic page describes a New Brunswick Secondary School Diploma at Grade 12 when the required coursework, graduation criteria and provincial examinations are completed. Students meeting Quebec’s separate requirements may also earn the Quebec Secondary School Diploma at Grade 11, and eligible students may pursue the IB Diploma. These are conditional, distinct awards; the guide does not assume every student receives all of them.

Ontario’s private-school guidance describes inspection for authority to grant OSSD credits, limited to instructional standards rather than all safety or staffing practices. This text was reviewed through official indexed evidence after direct retrieval failed. Request current provincial documentation and separate programme confirmation, then have the receiving institution review the exact credential and subjects. A school offer does not settle immigration or transfer-credit decisions.

Parent questions about Canada schools

Is there one Canadian secondary-school qualification?

CMEC describes provincial and territorial education responsibilities. The selected examples combine different provincial requirements with IB or AP study, and BCS describes awards issued by New Brunswick and Quebec under separate conditions. Confirm the actual issuer and graduation plan at the proposed school.

Does studying IB courses mean completing the full IB Diploma?

UCC explicitly distinguishes its full Diploma pathways from its IB Diploma Courses pathway. Ask which award the child would complete and which Ontario graduation requirements apply alongside it. Individual IB course results and the full Diploma should remain separate items in a senior-school comparison.
