Appleby College and St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School (SMLS) offer distinct Oakville choices across entry phases, Ontario coursework, senior enrichment and residential expectations. Check the exact receiving year and the student’s planned course sequence.
This guide accompanies 2 included profiles. It is a selected collection; confirm places and current charges with each school.
Checked 15 October 2026. Appleby’s course page displays 6 October 2026 and its Grade 12 page 14 August 2026 updates; its application page mixes future decision dates with a 2026–27 assessment label. SMLS links a 2026–27 course calendar that was not read. AP award definitions and universal Ontario legal requirements are not inferred from school summaries.
Appleby College’s published sequence separates Middle School Grades 7–8, Upper School Grades 9–10 and Senior School Grades 11–12. St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School (SMLS) is a girls’ school with Junior Kindergarten–Grade 5, Middle Grades 6–8 and Senior Grades 9–12 application routes. Those labels are not interchangeable: Appleby’s Upper School is an earlier pair of grades than SMLS’s four-year Senior School. Identify the exact grade and any siblings’ phases before comparing subject lists, or a family may accidentally assess two different points in secondary education.
The sites also shape a practical shortlist. Appleby publishes 540 Lakeshore Road West; SMLS gives 1080 Linbrook Road in Oakville. Visit the intended division and ask how the full school day works, including co-curricular commitments and collection. At Appleby, residential planning becomes a specific senior question: its Grade 11 page describes optional boarding, while the Grade 12 page states mandatory boarding. A family seeking a day-school arrangement throughout secondary education should discuss that final-year requirement at the start of the enquiry, rather than discover it after selecting senior subjects.

Appleby describes Ontario secondary credits leading toward the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), with additional academic and co-curricular requirements for its own Appleby Diploma. Its course page also explains accelerated sequencing: some Grade 8 work uses Grade 9 courses, and later pupils may take courses spanning more than one nominal grade. A transferring pupil therefore needs a transcript and prerequisite review, not a simple grade-number match. Ask which completed subjects receive credit, which compulsory components remain, and whether the desired combination can be scheduled; the school explicitly makes course offerings subject to enrolment and timetable constraints.
Both schools present AP opportunities, but the surrounding experience differs. Appleby’s Grade 12 page lists AP subjects within a broader senior programme and its additional diploma expectations. SMLS describes AP enrichment, a four-week professional internship in Grade 11, reach-ahead options and a culminating Grade 12 experience. Compare the student’s available time, existing preparation and the actual year’s course calendar before selecting a route. Ask how an internship or advanced subject fits required Ontario work and university prerequisites; a school’s enrichment description does not itself establish external credit or admission at a receiving university.

Appleby’s application page separates day applications from rolling boarding applications for Grades 9–12. It requests school reports, a confidential school report and age evidence, with English-language assessment routes differentiated by grade for non-native speakers. Its displayed October–December 2026 application dates lead to decisions through February 2027, but the same page calls its Kira assessment Admissions 2026–27. Confirm the intended entry year and assigned checklist directly. Prepare full course records for the accelerated-sequence discussion and disclose assessments or accommodations early, so admissions and student services can assess the proposed programme.
SMLS’s Senior School instructions require records, family and student interviews, an English-and-mathematics diagnostic and other checklist items. They say the school currently has no ESL programme and expects independent English fluency for classroom participation; that is an SMLS-specific provision, not a general rule for Oakville schools. Its wider application page identifies priority windows and selective mid-year placements, all subject to availability. Ask whether the proposed receiving grade is open and whether the language and learning environment fits now, alongside the senior-course plan. Treat a submitted application or an assessment appointment as a step in review, not confirmation of placement.

These are the pathways recorded for each included campus. Online provision appears separately. A senior qualification does not establish provision in younger years.

The directly read grade pages distinguish Grade 11 optional boarding from Grade 12 mandatory boarding. The admissions page offers rolling boarding applications for Grades 9–12 subject to remaining spaces. Ask the school to explain the final-year residential commitment, calendar and applicable arrangements for the individual pupil; earlier day attendance does not establish a Grade 12 day option.

Its Senior School application instructions state that it currently offers no ESL programme and requires independent English fluency for full participation. The page lists accepted proficiency assessments by grade. Discuss the pupil’s present classroom language and any support requirements with admissions before assuming the senior curriculum will be accessible.
